Curriculum Intent
At New Forest Care Alternative Provision we believe that Literacy is a fundamental life skill. We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in our literacy lessons in order to meet the needs of all our students. Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills, and understanding.
Our students have a range of abilities, which require suitable learning opportunities to enable them to succeed and progress. Speaking and listening activities are embedded throughout the curriculum.
ICT in literacy lessons is an integral part of the learning experience and specialist resources are available for students who often struggle with the written word.

ICT in Literacy
A key component of literacy lessons, with dedicated tools and resources provided to support students who find reading and writing challenging.
Our English curriculum is designed to inspire, engage, and empower our students by developing their literacy skills in a manner that is meaningful, accessible, and relevant to their lives. We recognise that many of our learners have faced barriers to education, and we aim to rebuild their confidence and enthusiasm for reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
The Five Key Learning Objectives are:
LO1: Composition – Writing Creatively and Structuring Ideas
“I can write clearly, creatively, and with purpose.”
LO2: Reading and Comprehension – Understanding and Responding to Texts
“I can read, understand, and talk about what I read.”
LO3: Grammar and Punctuation – Using Language Correctly
“I can use grammar and punctuation to make my writing clear and understandable “
LO4: Handwriting – Presentation and Legibility
“I can write neatly so others can read my work.”
LO5: Spelling – Accuracy and Strategies
“I can spell words correctly and use strategies to help me.”
